Being good sports
by Justin Bellinger, Guernsey Chief Executive
We’re so lucky to have so many different sports to choose from in Guernsey as well as great facilities for all islanders to enjoy. This is the second year we are sponsoring the Sports Volunteer of the Year category at the Pride of Guernsey awards and I’m pleased to say that the nominations are flying in. However, this is not the least bit surprising. Volunteers in Guernsey work incredibly hard to make this possible which is why Sure sponsors the Pride of Guernsey Sports Volunteer of the Year award. We really appreciate the hard work of individuals who put in countless hours to support sport in our island.
Volunteering requires a huge level of dedication, and this award acknowledges the efforts of those people behind the scenes but just as committed as the players. Many of Sure’s staff are passionate about sports and play an active role volunteering for local sports teams. We understand the importance of funding to help the clubs thrive, which is why Sure is committed to supporting local clubs and sports.
Building on last year’s Sports Volunteer of the Year award and ongoing sponsorships for a touch rugby team and a model powerboat racer, we wanted to ensure that more sports were supported and through staff nominations we’re now sponsoring five new sports: running, hockey, volleyball, cycling and swimming.
Some of these players, runners and riders will be competing in the Island Games hosted in Guernsey in 2023. As the Island Games technology partner, we will be supplying the latest broadband and mobile technology to local venues as well as enhancing the connectivity of spectators and visiting players, catching up on live scores and footage of the games. This technology investment won’t just be for the few weeks of the Island Games - it’ll stay in place for many years and will bring long-term benefits to our island’s sports venues to futureproof them for years to come.
