A Career in Tech: Callum Gill on his route to Sure Business
“Technology has always been a passion of mine and a big reason for that is the speed at which it develops, and how there is always something new to learn”
After 14 years of working in the tech industry, Professional Services Consultant Callum Gill has witnessed first-hand the scale at which we have come to depend on technology in our everyday lives.
We caught up with Callum on his career so far, and why keeping up with the latest technology is vital to his dynamic role.
Q: What led you to pursue a role in tech?
A: Deciding to pursue a role with Sure stemmed from my passion for technology. I’ve always been interested in the rate of advancement we’re currently seeing in the world and how dependent we have become on it for all aspects of our life. As things are changing so quickly, there is always something new to learn and different products to sell.
Q: How did you come to work at Sure?
A: I first joined Sure as part of the Sure Academy scheme. Since then, I have been offered multiple different opportunities to learn and further broaden my digital and tech-related knowledge. The Academy Scheme is available to school leavers and anyone looking for a career change. During my time in the scheme, I was given the opportunity to obtain an internationally recognised qualification, Cisco CCNA. This significantly helped in my professional journey and career path.
Q: What experience have you gained since then?
A: After completing the Sure Academy scheme, I qualified as a residential engineer specialising in landline and broadband installations. It was here that I gained my practical skills, like technical wiring, network optimisation and developing and building relationships with clients. After that, I moved to Sure Business, where I was able to focus on improving my communication skills and sales skills for our products.
Q: What does your current role involve?
A: Since becoming a consultant I’ve specialised in unified communications - supporting businesses in keeping their employees connected across different locations through various technologies. I now see projects through from start to finish, designing systems and regularly checking that we as a team at Sure Business are delivering the exact service required and that we’re actively making a positive difference for our customers.
Q: How has Sure Business helped you to hone your skills?
A: A significant part of my new role is keeping up to date with all the latest technology.I am able to use this knowledge every day and can apply it to real-life client cases. Sure Business works with such a variety of companies, across different sectors, so listening to clients and figuring out what their needs are is key in finding them the best solutions.
Q: What learning opportunities have been made available to you?
A: Learning is a big part of my job, particularly online modules. I’m encouraged to make that a part of my regular working week, and I’m grateful that I work for a company that values my professional development. With their support, I’ve gained accreditations and certifications from Microsoft, AWS, Cisco, Mitel and the SIP School, all of which allow me to provide the right combination of solutions to our customers.
Q: How would you describe your career journey from starting out in Sure Academy to now?
A: It’s been brilliant. I’m grateful to Sure Business for all the support I have been offered throughout the last 14 years and I’m excited to see what the future holds.
