Free fibre upgrade for all users during COVID-19
Following discussions with Digital Jersey and the Government of Jersey, telecom operators in the island (JT, Sure & Homenet) have agreed that all fibre broadband connections will be increased to a symmetrical 1 Gbit/s at no extra cost. Doing so will assist, amongst other things, the significant increase in home-working and home-isolating as Islanders adapt to the measures being put in place to contain the spread of COVID-19.
The work to increase the speeds will take place over the course of the next two weeks, at which point all fibre broadband users will benefit from 1 Gbit/s symmetrical speeds (1 Gbit/s upload and 1 Gbit/s download). Tariffs paid by broadband subscribers will not change.
This arrangement will last for as long as the current COVID-19 measures remain in place unless otherwise agreed by all parties.
CEO of Digital Jersey, Tony Moretta, commented:"These are challenging times and it is great to see the industry work together to facilitate the introduction of these higher broadband speeds. With our 100% fibre network, Jersey is in the unique position of being able to easily support all the services required for both remote working and living for the entire population.
We will continue to work with Government and industry to ensure both businesses and consumers have the technology they need." Senator Lyndon Farnham, Minister for Economic Development, Sport and Culture and Assistant Chief Minister, commented: "Anything that can be done to support the Island at this time is most welcome. I want to thank Digital Jersey and all the telecoms operators for working together to deliver this solution."
